Untargeted Metabolomics

Precision Metabolomics Services

While targeted panels deliver precise quantification of defined metabolites, biological systems are far more complex than any fixed list. Untargeted screening extends each analysis by capturing additional metabolites present in the sample, even if no internal standards are available. These compounds are measured as relative abundances across samples, and many can be annotated with high confidence to known metabolites.

Amino acids, acylcarnitines, and organic acids are central intermediates of energy metabolism, protein turnover, and cellular regulation. Their concentrations reflect mitochondrial function, nutrient utilization, and the dynamic balance between anabolic and catabolic pathways.

This layer of analysis is especially valuable for detecting unexpected metabolic changes, discovering novel biomarkers, or generating new hypotheses that targeted assays alone might miss. For example, untargeted screening can reveal secondary pathways activated under stress, diet-dependent microbial metabolites in faecal samples, or previously overlooked compounds in disease models.

The Amino Acid and Energy Metabolism analysis supports studies in nutrition, metabolism, microbiome interactions, and systems biology. It can be extended through combination with lipid, bile acid, or short-chain fatty acid panels for comprehensive pathway coverage and integrated metabolic interpretation.

By combining targeted precision with untargeted discovery, each study gains both reliability and breadth. Including untargeted screening alongside your chosen panel ensures you not only confirm what you set out to measure, but also uncover what you didn’t know to look for.

Sample preparation and sample analysis

Sample preparation for untargeted metabolomics

Untargeted metabolomics requires precise and reproducible sample handling to ensure comprehensive metabolite recovery. We use validated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) optimized for minimal bias, broad compound coverage, and metabolite stability.

Supported matrices include

  • Biological fluids: plasma, serum, urine, saliva, cerebrospinal fluid
  • Cells and tissues: cell cultures, tissue biopsies, microbial and plant extracts
  • Specialized matrices: feces/gut content, food and feed samples, cell media, and supernatants
  • Model systems: clinical, nutritional, and environmental studies

Our preparation workflows ensure reliable extraction metabolites, maximizing the metabolome coverage and ensuring cross-sample comparability.

Untargeted panels for detailed metabolic profiling

Untargeted metabolomics is performed using high-resolution LC-MS and GC-MS platforms capable of detecting thousands of features in a single run. This enables both qualitative and semi-quantitative assessments of the metabolome, providing a comprehensive snapshot of metabolic activity.

Our untargeted metabolism panels

LC-MS Untargeted Metabolomics

Covers polar and/or non-polar metabolites through complementary chromatographic techniques (HILIC and reverse-phase LC-MS). This analysis captures a wide range of biochemical classes including amino acids, organic acids, sugars, nucleotides, lipids, and signaling molecules. The approach provides a comprehensive view of metabolic activity and pathway dynamics across biological systems.

GC-MS Untargeted Metabolomics

Measures a broad range of acylcarnitine species to evaluate fatty acid oxidation, carnitine transport, and mitochondrial efficiency. Supports studies on energy metabolism and lipid–amino acid interaction.
